We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to work with students in the classroom. UC Davis (undergraduate or graduate) students and postdocs interested in volunteering should read the following information, check out the volunteer calendar. We take on both facilitators (volunteers to help run the activity) as well as activity leads (volunteers that design and teach the activity).
Sign-up forms are emailed out at the beginning and end of each quarter via graduate group coordinators and select listservs. If you don't receive the sign-up email, free free to email our volunteer coordinator, Jared Lee-Kin (jleekin [at] ucdavis.edu) to ask for the link to the sign-up forms.

Who can volunteer?
- Current UC Davis undergraduate or graduate students or postdocs
- Any major or field of study (you don't have be in science, technology, engineering, or math)
- No teaching experience necessary, but we want people who are passionate about STEM and working with middle school students
What is the structure of the after school program?
- The club meets twice a month at each school
- Tuesdays 3–4pm at Holy Rosary Catholic School in the Science Lab (with travel time: 2:20-4:30pm)
- Thursdays 3–4pm at Winters Middle School in Room 1 (with travel time: 2:30-4:30pm)
- Each meeting volunteers lead the middle school students in a hands-on STEM activity (designed by us!)
- The goal is to feature as many different branches of STEM (e.g. chemistry, ecology, engineering, etc.) as possible
What are the requirements to volunteer?
- Fill out the sign-up form
- Volunteers are NOT required to attend every after school meeting, they can choose which meetings they attend
- Volunteers MUST attend the specific preparation session (approximately one hour) the week before each after school meeting that they plan to attend
- Preparation sessions will cover the schedule, activity, etc. for each school meeting
I'm interested in being an activity lead! What does it entail?
- Activity leads typically run 1-hour sessions at both schools to introduce a STEM concept in their field!
- Class sizes typically range from 15-40 students depending on the activity. Supplies can be reimbursed by STEM Squad.
- We ask that you design a brief lesson plan to outline the flow, learning goals, and volunteer duties for the activity. Our activity lead coordinator can also work with you to help design an activity.
- Co-leads or collaborations with other campus orgs are always welcome!
- We recommend attending an activity beforehand to gain an idea of working with middle schoolers
What is the mode of transportation to/from the schools?
- Typically, carpools are set up during prep sessions the week before. On the day of the activity, we meet 2:20 in the parking lot behind Storer Hall (by the loading dock).
- If you would like to drive there directly, let us know beforehand. See Maps and Directions for details.
What if I have other questions?
- Email our volunteer coordinator, Jared Lee-Kin (jleekin [at] ucdavis.edu)
